Before we start, below are something you must know.
1. Natively Supported Formats for Zune Devices
The following codecs and formats can be synchronized and played back on the Zune device.
WMV 7/8/9 - up to 320x240 and 1.692 Mbps
WMA - up to 320 Kbps, CBR and VBR, up to 48-kHz sample rate
MP3 - up to 320 Kbps, CBR and VBR, up to 48-kHz sample rate
AAC (.mp4, .m4a, .m4b, .mov) - up to 320 Kbps, Low Complexity (LC), up to 48-kHz sample rate
Pictures - JPEG (.jpg) up to 640x480

2. Video Formats and Sync Time
* If the video/audio files meet the limitation mentioned above, you can transfer to Zune software and sync to Microsoft Zune player super fast.
* If the files are WMV, MP4, H.264, MPEG-4 or MP3, WMA, AAC formats (but exceed the limitation), you can still transfer them to Zune software and sync to Zune devices. But, the sync time is fairly longer because the files will be converted to the formats natively supported by Zune player during the sync process.
* If you'd like to put other video files or DVDs on Zune, you'd better convert them to WMV7/8/9 or WMA formats, which are supported by Zune natively. This will save a lot of time.

Unfortunatly these programs only convert to .mp4 and h264, which means they'll have to be converted to .wmv in the sync process.  Been looking for a nice software package similar to this that'll go straight to .wmv to skip that conversion during sync step.  Plus .wmv can stream to a 360 as an added bonus...

That looks all well and good, but that's a $30 program.  I don't think anyone here wants to drop that kind of coin just to play videos on their Zune.

Windows Media Encoder 9 is a Microsoft program and it's free and will convert any file to a .wmv file with no extra steps.  I got this off of Zune.net and I have tested it and it works great.

Using Windows Media Encoder to Encode Video Content

You can use Windows Media Encoder 9 Series to encode video to a WMV file that is suitable for the Zune device. To download the free encoder, go to the Microsoft Download Center.

The following instructions describe how to use Windows Media Encoder to encode content up to the maximum quality for the Zune device. Content can be from either a live source (for example, a video camera) or an existing video file.

To encode content for the Zune device using Windows Media Encoder

   1. Click the Start menu, and select Windows Media > Windows Media Encoder.
   2. In the New Session dialog box, click the Wizard tab, and then double-click Custom Session.
   3. In Windows Media Encoder, on the Sources tab, under Source from, do one of the following:
          * Select Devices if your content is on a device such as a video camera or a capture card.
          * Select File if content is in digital format accessible from your compute, and then locate the file you want to convert.
   4. On the Output tab, check the Archive to file checkbox, and then choose a location and file name.
   5. On the Compression tab, select the following encoding settings:

Setting    Value
Destination   File download (computer playback)
Video    DVD quality video (1 Mbps VBR)
By choosing VBR, the encoder will perform two-pass encoding, which maximizes the overall quality of the video although it takes roughly double the time to encode.
To perform one-pass encoding, choose DVD quality video (1 Mbps CBR)
Audio    CD quality audio (VBR)

   1. Click Edit.
   2. In the Custom Encoding Settings dialog box, click 1073 Kbps, and select the following encoding settings:

Setting   Value
Audio Format   128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz, stereo CBR
Video Size    320x240
Video bit rate   500K

   1. Click OK to close the Custom Encoding Settings dialog box.
   2. Click Apply.

Note

You can choose to configure additional parameters on the remaining tabs as well.

10. On the toolbar menu, click Start Encoding.

For additional information about Windows Media Encoder, see the following resources:

As far as ripping DVD to WMV, I like AoA DVD Ripper.  It can also convert to Ipod and PSP formats.

People, these are rebranded iPod video converters, nothing is different! They're not free either, they have watermarks. On the Zune page, it says "Use microsoft media encoder", look on the site....

$30's nothing, and after i buy a new dell for my gf i may try it out, but after my poor experience with software downloads i'll have to do more research on it. but i hope it works, because she really wants something that can rip DVD's on her laptop rather than having to use mine all the time.

Anything from iTunes isn't going to work... anything that's DRM'd from another store isn't going to work unless you have a program that can crack the coding.
