Source: http://zuneinsider.com/archive/2007/10/05/in-which-i-attempt-to-answer-some-zune-questions.aspxAccessories - we're using the same size USB input, so most of the accessories you got for Zune 30 will work with Zune 30, Zune 80, Zune 4, and Zune 8. Accessories like a Zune 30 case obviously won't work, but accessories like docks and FM transmitters will. The new additions to the family will come with some pre-loaded content - stay tuned for a post on that. I believe the pre-load list is done, I just need to sync with the Music Marketing team. No portable hard drive support or a clock - we really wanted to nail some core music experiences and get them right first. I'm personally really excited about them. According to Zunester, podcasting will support bookmarking your listening/viewing location in a podcast. On screen resolution is 320x240 - but new Zunes will import 640x480 withouth transcoding. Video-out resolution is 640x480. All Zunes have native support for WMA lossless audio - no need to transcode your content. Gapless playback isn't a supported feature in this iteration. The MP3s we'll offer in Zune Marketplace won't have any watermarking.

Fixed Right on. It's not a big deal, I've just seen you do it before and didn't understand why. - And back ON TOPIC -- Man ... no Gapless is a crazy huge bummer. HDD is a pretty big bummer. No clock is an average size bummer. However, 640x480 video support is pretty cool. Podcasting is good (finally) and a resume feature for audio is sorely needed. All and all .... we're almost where we should have been at launch. Almost.

If the new Zunes also have preloaded freebies out of the box, that's a clear indication to me that alternate OS support (read MAC), will not be around for a while. As I mentioned in another thread, the ability to be formatted to an HFS system to be read on OS X would erase the free preloads, so they would have to provide a special card to each user that purchases one to get this stuff directly from the Marketplace if they were to still keep up with this free introductory content (this is similar to the U2 special edition iPod, which has a special number that lets you download a U2 video for free from iTunes)
No clock is a downer though. I know it's not that big a deal, and is not the real reason to even buy one of these things, but my iPod took away the need to carry my cell phone and wristwatch altogether just to be able to keep up with a schedule on the go. Lack of UMS support is a bigger downer, because a device that supports it allows me to do big data transfers as opposed to flash cards (which are expensive passed the 2GB range).
The 640x480 support is a definite plus, but lack of gapless playback is a tremendous downer. Without this, a great deal of my library would not even be welcome on this device, since I could never listen to it with forced gaps in between (try listening to "Don't get lost in Heaven" and "Demon Days" with a big gap in between and not be annoyed).

Ya, or live concert stuff. Or stand up CDs.
No gapless is baffling, actually. What element of the "core music experience" are they working on, if not simple playback?

Yeah, really. I mean, this is like the most important part of the listening experience. A good beefy audio circuit is nice, a big album display is great, better stock buds are keen, lossless support is super, but without gapless...big woop. I'm still interested in the one I bought, and I don't foresee ever selling it when it comes, but it won't be able to carry the stuff I really love to listen to, since a lot of it is in gapless.

Gapless playback means that, for example, a live concert CD will sound like one long song. Awesomeness. No gapless, however, means that same Live CD will sound like 17 separate tracks. BOO-URNS big time.

WHOA WHOA WHOA. From the comments on that blog entry: --- T
There are reports that Zune 30 will not natively support the new video codecs either. Is that also true?
---
admin
t - zune 30 will transcode content that into .wmv, and will natively support wma lossless.--- WHA?! Our old zunes won't have the new codec support?!? Wow man, I really hope I'm reading that wrong. **EDIT** Confirmed. Zune 30s will not support the new codecs."the Zune 30GB will not be able to natively play MPEG-4/H.264 content. It will still be transcoded by the Zune software at sync." http://zuneinsider.com/archive/2007/10/05/in-which-i-attempt-to-answer-some-zune-questions.aspx <-- check the comments.
