I picked up my Zune this morning, Installed the software, Plugged the Zune into the USB. everything went smoothly.

Then the Firmware upgrade was being performed, The zune went into this continuous rebooting. The start up splash screen pops up, then asks to connect the zune to the PC. this goes on and on.

I waited for 20min before unplugging the USB cable, Rebooting the computer. Same thing.

Is my unit bricked? when the unit is not plugged into the USB port the same screen shows up and turns its self off.

Thanks,
Boris Cry

* Level 1 tech support no help. But I did learn how to do a hard reset of the device by holding the back arrow and the up on the pad at the same time. Use caution this may delete everything.

Now on hold for the next level

* update -
The unit is now working. Apparently when the firmware update attempted to load onto the device the USB drivers failed to recognize the zune during its reboot phase.

I had to install the software on another computer to complete the firmware upgrade and then I was able to plug the unit back into my main PC and it was recognized.

shew, what a PITA

Same happened to me, to fix it I ended up just unplugging it, shutting down the zune software, booting it back up and plugging my zune back in and everything worked perfectly after that.

btw - there is already a kb article on charging the zune.  Seems that some USB ports don't provide enough juice to charge the device (such as on un-powered hubs which could include the ports on the front of some PCs).  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927348/en-us?sd=zune.  Perhaps this could be the issue even with your firmware update problem where the port was not providing a solid connection to the device.  Try plugging the device into a different port (such as on the back of the PC) to see if that makes a difference.

Im pretty sure it does make a difference...I know its harder to reach wahwahwah, but the back ports really do seem to fix alot of stuff. In the front ports on mine i couldnt get it to recognize, but in the back it was found right away.

Also, after a what seemed like an endless conversation with the level 1 tech support guy from zune, he told me how to restore my zune, which i had no clue how to do before, but now i run into a different problem.:

So basically when it restores, it clears everything on the zune, and then rebuilds the main files, with this the firmware. You actually have to plug the zune into your computer to update the firmware before you can use the zune again. So when i update the firmware, it gets stuck at the screen after the %'s are done updating, and the screen says "Waiting for device to update." Its actually been at this screen since 1215 last night (CST), and I figured id just let it keep going until something happended. Nothing has. I was going to call MS back, but a) I didnt wanna talk to someone I couldn't understand for an hour again (both times I've called I had to ask for someone different to talk to cause I couldnt understand the first person) and b) figured while im at school ill just wait for replys here.

thanks

To me it appeared that when the firmware upgrade was performed there was a change in the USB driver on both sides. I herd the tail tail "bloop" noise windows makes when a USB device is plugged in and unplugged. when the Zune rebooted windows never recognized it.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled whithout success. Probably too much left behind to make a difference.

I believe since the Zune didn't get the upgrade properly and the software did, may be thats why it was not recognized.

Unfortunately for Kevin i don't have any other Ideas other than find a friend with the zune and try it on theirs.

There is definately a bug in the Zune software when upgrading the device firmware where it stays at "waiting for device to update" when in fact the device has already been updated.  This is going to be fixed in an update but for now you can un-plug your device and hit the "Cancel" button.  Then plug the device back in and continue from there.  The tell-tale sign that your firmware was updated is that you will have a "Community" option on the main menu screen.
