^^ doesn't work because there is no option to connect as a guest, just a "link my device to.." or "skip" option, and neither work as far as the whole deleting files from software = deleting files from device. unless there's a percentage of us that has an error where it doesn't ask you to.

ok i found out after syncing if you choose "forget this device" it does work, BUT.... you have to do this after every sync if you want it on your device. kind of annoying but it works.

Will we be needing to use this dl every time we sync or is this meant to permanently fix the problem?

I gave this a try (using an unmonitored folder for storage) with a sample song I ripped last night, and it worked great. I now have a song on my Zune that is no longer on my HD. Thanks guys, this was the one thing that was pissing me off about the Zune. I got it to mainly use as a video viewer so I can watch movies on it at work on breaks, but having to keep all the DVD conversions on my computer just so they stay on my Zune was really starting to eat up HD space. So this weekend, I'm gonna remove most of those folders from the Collections list, and then drag the stuff I want to keep on the Zune to it, then save myself a few gigs of HD space. Thanks again! I just ran the spell check, by the way. Appearently, it doesn't know the word Zune

This is getting ridiculous and I'm starting to get really pi**ed off. I have added items several times and they keep getting deleted. I don't want to connect as a guest. I own this *&^*&$ content and I want it on my Zune. I tried creating a folder, adding the content, then 'removed' it from the settings, then deleted the folder. Sure enough it worked the first time I synced and then deleted the time after that. I seriously hope this is an oversight by MS that they plan of fixing because it is so freaking stupid.

This is exactly the information I came here looking for. I thought I had a fix, but I was wrong. Sorry MS, but I don't have an 80+ gig hard drive to store all my music. I've had to offload music I've ripped over the years to multiple CDs and DVDs. The sync thing really irks me.

I tried creating a folder, adding the content, then 'removed' it from the settings, then deleted the folder. Sure enough it worked the first time I synced and then deleted the time after that. So you made a folder with content in it, then added that folder to your monitored folders so it would show in your collection, then after syncing it to your Zune, you unmonitored the folder and deleted it? I think that's your problem right there, I had the same thing happen once. I think the trick is to never have the folder monitored in the first place. I have a folder for vids that has never been added to the monitored folder list, and so far, it hasn't deleted anything from the Zune that I deleted from that folder. What you do is open the Zune software, then open the folder where what you want is, then drag the content you want from the folder to your Collection, and it will get added to that. Then sync, and after closing the Zune software, delete what you want, and it stays in the Collection as a shell file, I guess, kind of a placeholder. I've done this with several movies and TV shows, and it hasn't deleted anything that's no longer on my PC yet.

I also just realized something else: I hooked up my USB HDD, set it up as a monitored folder, then transfered some vids from it to the Zune. Then I unhooked the drive, and all the stuff still shows in my collection, and stayed on the Zune. So if you put all your vids on a separate drive, they won't autodelete when you unplug it. Of course, if it's a monitored drive, and you delete stuff off of it, then the next time you have it hooked up for a sync, it probably will delete, since it will see the drive again. Anyways, just putting another option out there for saving your main HDD space.

From what was said in this thread i did a quick test to see the easiest way i could get this to work. not sure if this part matters but i set my videos to not auto sync (since i would be using a video to sync with). i made a copy of one of the movies in my movies folder (the monitored folder). Renamed it and put it on my desktop (a non-monitored folder). then i just drag dropped the file in my video collection, and drag/dropped that onto my zune to sync. after the sync was completed i unplugged the zune checked to make sure the file was on my zune and then deleted the newly created file off my desktop. i reconnected my zune and the file was still in my collection and on my device (although the computer did not have an image next to the name just a white box in both the device and collection tabs. however the image was still on the zune device its self). i didnt do any syncing this time, simply connected the device to my computer that no longer had the video on it. after i removed my zune from the computer again i went into my video folder and i was still able to watch the movie that had just been deleted off my computer.
hope this makes sense to everyone. i havent tried it with auto syncing on yet but I dont see why it would not work the same way.
<EDIT>
Just ran the same test using multiple automatic syncs. drag a file off desktop it auto syncs as soon as it was finished syncing i deleted the file off my hard drive (leaving it on the collecion tab). unsync zune file is ON ZUNE but not on computer. good news. resync drag a different movie into the collection after it finishes syncing this movie i disconnect zune, and delete the file. again i have another video on my zune but not on my hard drive. reconnect again nothing has changed my collection tab still thinks both videos are there and they are there on my device. i delete them off my collection tab and they are removed from my device aswell.
hope this clears up any confusion. I mainly just tested what Trashy said and tried to make out what i did and why it worked as clearly as possible.
key is if you want your media to be on your zune and not on your HD, DON'T save it in your "my music/video/picture" folders and simply drag/drop from the original folder to the appropriate collection tab. (most people want drag/drop anyway just picture the zune software as the folder that would open up in this circumstance)
