I am just listening to some music. My daughter came talk to me for few seconds, and I paused the Z80. The battery was at around 50% (I know for sure, I always look at it). All sudden, my Zune 80 have gone blank. I said "What the *&^%?" I press the play button few times. I got big red battery icon in the middle of the screen. My battery was completely drained with in few seconds from 50% down 0%. It wouldn't power up any more, it just gave big red bat icon and went blank. After I plug the cable in for 5 min. The Z80 rebooted. It's so weird. It's trying to charge the battery right now... I did the battery test last week, I got 9 hrs of play time from 50% level. I am not sure what happen???

Do yourself a favor...
If you're not using WiFi - Turn It Off.
That may well solve your 'erratic battery indicator' issue.

I turned off WiFi the very first day I got the player. I just double check it and it's still off

Hm? That is weird. My Zune 30 isn't charging at the moment I'm writing this. It's plugged in but nothing. IDK.
[oh, and wrong thread.]

one thing most people should take into account is that well.. the first 1-2 months or so, a NEW product WILL have bugs. its most likely just a battery indicator bug which should get fixed later on

Something like that happened to my 80. I docked it in the octavio and it shut down instantly. It would not turn on. I stuck it on my DLO charger and it started to charge an after a few minutes it was working again. I haven't dared stick it on octavio again, so I'm using my 30 on that.

Well, I don't expect Z80 to be perfect device. despite all these, I still love my Z80. But I do want iPone 2, not as music player. Consider Z80 is gen 2 where iPod is now at gen 5.5. I think Zune team did really well. I still pick Z80 before iPod.

Had the same power drain happen also, put it iin the charger when I got home and all's been good the last few days. Wrote it off but if it happens again I will be calling service.

Same thing happened to me, was on the train coming home from work and I would say I was near 70% battery based on the visual indicator. Got home, powered it off. A bit later, my daughter goes to use it and it won't turn on, just get the big drained battery icon. I plugged it in to the usb to charge for a few mins, it came on and has not had same issue since. Not sure what happened. Will be keeping an eye on it though.

I used to get that on my 30 all the time before the update -- I could never be sure that my zune would work or have any battery, regardless of what the battery indicator said when I left it last (some people thought it was "user error" for some reason when I would post about it).
But with the new firmware, my 30 hasn't done it at all. In fact, I've been super impressed with the battery and behaviour of my ol' 30 lately.
One thing I did notice though, was when I went to unlock the door to my apartment, a shock jumped from the keyhole to the key (pretty common occurrence) and my zune shut off and died *instantly*. It was in my pocket and nowhere near the static charge, but just the same it shut down right down.
Possibly some shocks are to blame here?

that's hilarious... I would love to see some pics of this error There isn't any error message. All I know is: the player just went blank (dark) from a reasonable amount of battery according to battery level. In my case was from 50%. The player wouldn't power up unless it is charged. Even with power is connected. It wouldn't power up not for at lesat 5 - 10 min of charge time. Then it will automatically reboot itself. Then it resumed its normal operation. It only happened to me once so far.
