PityOnU, a respected member at ZuneBoards: Finally, a release candidate of zAlternator is here! Yay! zAlternator is a program that will allow the Zune to be picked up and synced with programs other than the Zune program. It has been fully tested and proven to allow the Zune to be picked up and synced with the Zune program (duh), Windows Media Player 11, Winamp, and MediaMonkey. I have been unable to fully test the iTunes side of the program, but hopefully it should work. More info here.

It doesn't eliminate the need for the new Zune software. You have to start the Zune software and kill it every time you want to sync. With that caveat in mind, I'm sure that it will be beneficial to many.

wow just tried this and can confirm it works (for me) with mediamonkey. and the cool thing is that i only had to kill the sync process on the zune software once. i thought you had to do it each time you wanted to sync with another program. this is sweet! the first thing i tried was syncing from MM and it worked perfect. the next thing i tried and this makes me very happy is editing the tags on the device and it worked!! now i'm gonna test making a playlist from media on the device. alot of the music i put on my zune i've deleted from my pc and it's impossible to create a playlist on the zune software (without having to copy to my collection of which i have no HD space to do so). if i can do that then i'm sold.

Reboot your system, or try to run the Zune software again and let us know what happens.

Excellent. I just tried it multiple times with MediaMonkey. Seems to work but because MM only does music, it isn't useful for me. WMP10 synced great on one system. I'm going to try on my main system.

rebooting doesn't "clear" the sync settings. after a reboot i opened MM and there was my zune.
and there's tons of add-ons for MM such as video support.
