I finally found a board where people are having the same problem as me!
I have had it for three weeks and I have some cheap old Sony Walkman earphones, and while listening to the zune at work, it resets when I shift in my chair. I thought it was because of a slight/quick yank on the earphones, but after reading everyone else's symptoms, maybe it is some kind of static shock.
I was going to return it for a new one at best buy today, but being past 14 days I don't know if they will allow it.
That is the only issue I have with it and the fact I swear the battery only lasts a few hours for me.

Can everyone find out the impedance of their headphones? It should be in ohms. Mine are 16 ohms.
Does anyone know the impedance of the earbuds supplied with the Zune?
ETA: Never mind. It appears that's not the issue. My husband's boss is an audiophile and thought that may be it. I think it's static. My workplace is full of it, and that's where I'm using the Zune the most.

Not static actually. This is a result of the headphone drawing too much power from the zune battery which causes it to shut down. I recommend an external power amp portable so that the headphones are powered separately and the zune doesn't shutdown randomly.

But I have an old set of headphones that can't possibly be drawing too much power. And wouldn't this be a configuration that would have been tested real thoroughly?

Because no one is using the same headfones on the Zune!

M$ testing? uh... Actually, I doubt that they tested the zune with different configurations, probably just with the standards and premium headfones.

But awfulshot is using the Zune earbuds, and is having this problem. What specs are we supposed to look for to get headphones that don't "draw too much power"? And why couldn't static be the problem?
Just trying to narrow down the issues.

the zune seams to build up some charge somewhere, and either release it on your ears(ouch!) or zune, and make it restart(lame!) (?)
happens in: many types of headphones many situations(arcwelding, walking, sitting)

Well, I returned mine for a new one at best buy. If this keeps on happing and MSFT has no answer, I will have to return it for an Ipod. This is ridiculous and I can't believe its not a much more common problem. Granted, I live in Minnesota and it is winter time, so static buildup is unavoidable, but this is unbelievable that this can be out to the public with such a touchy problem.

I'm on Zune #2 and it's still happening to me. Call the support center and report it, whether you keep it or not.
