Well, it happened with Zune #2.  I moved my feet on the carpet and the thin shutdown on me.  I think I am going to go see if they have a rubber case for it and see if it does anything.

Mine shut down probably 8 times yesterday (after not having shut down for the first week I've owned it).  I was walking around shopping yesterday as opposed to it sitting still at my desk.  Aha, so I tried it at the gym today on the treadmill.  I kept it in my pocket as I was running briskly and no problems at all.  It hasn't shut down once today.

Since I bought mine at Costco with perpetual returns I'm not too worried.  I'll return it some months from now when it stops being an issue with current production runs.

A little off topic, but a word to the wise Costco shoppers...I read today that they are going to change their "lenient return policy" starting in January.....

I'm wondering if this article from Microsoft's Knowledgebase is any help...Mentions the backlight turning off, but doesn't say how to stop that from happening..I'm having the same problem, especially when I have the "Hold" feature turned on.  It's starting to get on my nerves..

CAUSE
You experience this behavior if one of the following conditions is true:• The battery charge is weak.
• One of the following events has occurred and the Hold switch is set to the locked position: • The backlight turned off.
• The Zune device was turned off.
• The Zune device went to sleep.

THINGS TO TRY
1. Move the Hold switch to the unlocked position.
Note If the Hold switch appears to be stuck, move the switch back and forth to make sure that the switch is fully in the unlocked position.
2. Connect the Zune device to a power source.
Note If the Zune device is in sleep mode, this action will wake the Zune device and turn it on. If the battery does not have a charge, you may have to wait several minutes for the Zune device to turn on. I think I am returning mine and see if they fix it later on.  It is of no use for me right now.

yeah, returning it and waiting is probably the best strategy for those who have this problem. the real question is, might all zunes have the problem and depending on how staticy it is some people are more effected by this problem than others?

this is crazy.  mine reboots when it's been on hold for a while, and i have a friend whose reboots in the middle of playing songs!  she is about ready to exchange hers for an ipod.  i'm just posting to bump this topic up and hopefully somebody will eventually get an answer on what the heck is going on.

Mine does it probably once a day when listening to it at work for about 6 hours straight.  It never does it while plugged into the USB though, so I'm assuming you guys may be right about the power problems.

Ok, I have an idea not sure that itll work or not, but I had this problem up until yesterday and the one thing I changed was I didnt have the hold button on. Can anyone else confirm this with a test for a day or two? Im playing it again non stop today and so far so good, again with the hold button off. If all goes well today I will start playing it in the am and put the hold button on and see what happens.

Im wondering if there isnt some kind of issue with the software timing out when the hold button is on for too long. Just a thought.

Yeah, I had never had the lock/hold switch set.  I guess the Zune is just not ready for primetime.  I exchanged my 2nd zune without any problems for an Ipod and no reboots on me.  At this point I am happy.

I've been cruzing this forum for some weeks now and was getting closer to purchasing a zune until I came to this discussion.  Seems to be multiple reasons for problem - static, DRM, firmware, hardware, but no definitive answer.   Also no response from tech support concerns me.  Even an acknowledgement that they are aware/working on problem would help.  Is anyone tabulating:

- # of zunes this is affecting
- DRM/Zune sub. vs. private collection or mixed (private and purchased)
- # songs/disk usage i.e. is this only happening to zunes that have > x songs or x% of disk usage.

I always expect some problems with 1 gen products (sometimes even 2nd and 3rd gen).  If it's software, that seems fixable, but if this turns out to be a hardware/design issue, I like to know how MS is going to handle it.

I'll keep monitoring and hope to see a solution soon - until then I'm in a holding pattern.

Honestly, I'd take the 1-2 resets a day and keep the Zune.  The ipod just doesn't compare, I love the UI and the screen size.  Here's hoping they can fix this with a firmware upgrade  Wink

I don't know why, but suddenly my Zune has been working properly. I haven't done anything to it. Shut down once on Monday morning, nothing since then. I realize I've probably jinxed myself by posting this, but I thought I'd share.

It's all very weird.  Huh?  But let's hope this is the end of my troubles. I can handle it restarting itself once a week. Smiley
