Actually it wasn't "operator error" (well sort of). The video I wanted to convert was 2.35:1 and not 1.85:1 like most widescreen videos. I just have to find the proper zune resolution for a 2.35 video.

One more question, I downloaded two video trailers from Gametrailers.com. They are both 720p h.264. I used FZVC 1.1 to convert them. One video works fine on the Zune but the other stops playing after 10 seconds. Both converted videos work fine on the Zune PC software though.

There may be a bad frame in the one that is giving you trouble. This can happen if other things are going on in the background or something interrupts while the encoding is taking place. While a PC can usually just keep playing past the error, sometimes resulting in a sudden audio sync issue, something like the zune can't.

You could try using AVC (Any Video Converter) too. I had to many problems with FZVC.

I usually have a specific folder I send output to and I keep it empty for the most part. It doesn't really need to go directly to a zune-monitored folder. After checking the output file results to make sure it's acceptable, then I just move the file to a folder monitored by the zune software, in my case it goes in My Documents < My Videos, but not until I make sure it's a good conversion. See my alternative guide using DVD decrypter and AVC here: http://www.zunescene.mobi/forums/index.php?topic=49073.msg570614#msg570614

Step 2: Converting your VOB file or other Video file to Zune compatible format:
11.  Open Free Zune Video Converter 1.0.
12.  Drag the VOB or other video file (see below for all the file types FZVC 1.0 supports).
13.  Under Ouput file format/Video Settings select mp4 (if you are using a Zune80, 120, 4, 8, or 16) or select wmv ver. 1 or ver. 2 (if you are using a Zune30).   Select 500 kbps for the Bitrate if you are just watching the video on your zune or select 1000 kbps for the bit rate if you plan to show your video on a tv.  Select 29.97 fps under FPS.
14.  Under Audio Settings, select 128 kbps for the Bitrate and select 44100 Hz for the Sampling Freq.
15.  Under Advanced Settings, Select Custom under Resolution.  Under Resolution, type in 320 for the Width and 240 for the Height.  If you movie seems squished try 320 x 180.  For tv viewing select 640 x 480 for fullscreen and 720 x 480 for widescreen.
16.  Select where you want the final video file to go under Ouput Directory.
17.  Press Convert.

this worked perfect for my zune 30gb for converting avi to zune. except i used 'WMV 8' "Under Ouput file format/Video Settings"

thanks Cheesy

Yup, it does work for some people, but doesn't work for many including myself. Probably depends on many variables such as file associations, codecs installed, and other system environment variables. FZVC simply failed to produce a useable file every time I tried. And yes, I do believe you need to use WMV 8 for a zune 30. WMV9 for the 120 or ZHD.

I take it that you want to encode using the MP4 container. If that's the case, use h.264. The resulting video will be compatible on both the zune and ipod. Match the frame size and frame rate of your source, or if it's a large frame size like 720X480 you could divide that in half and it will still look fine. If you're using a zune hd, leave the dimensions alone. The program has pre-sets for frame size but will still allow you to type one in manually. Use the maximum bit rate for MP4 h.264 that your device supports, for best quality. Good luck, and happy encoding.

Yes, it should work fine. This is for the old zune BUT the zune HD plays those formats too, in addition to HD WMV format.
