I just upgraded my Zune30's battery and harddrive; but, when I try to install the firmware I get the C00D124F error, saying that I don't have enough hard drive space. If I put the old HDD in, everything works fine. So, obviously there is some kind of bull**** block, but looking around on the internet, it's hard to figure out what I need to do to get this to work (being that this is kind of an old topic and there have been updates since then). So, what do I need to do, and cheers for the help.

Try doing a full format on the new HDD.   Back + Center + Left should wipe everything off.

I've given that a go. It seems to be some sort of restriction on installing the firmware on a new harddrive.

is the replacement drive, new?  it would seem to me that if it's new, then there's nothing on it to "confuse" the Zune..  I'll keep looking around

Yeah, it's a new 120GB. I think the problem is with some some sort of restriction placed - that's what it seems like when I've tried researching the problem. It appears that solutions used to be things like downgrading the zune software etc?

So doing some more research, I might be able to get it to work if I downgrade to 2.5? Does anyone have any idea how to do this?

I did a quick search for the 2.5 software. It seems to be out there.  I imagine you will need to uninstall the current version you have loaded up, install the 2.5 version, connect the Zune to that, and once they connect and the firmware is installed, you should be able to upgrade both.

Still researching...

Multiple websites, forums, etc, etc point to possibly a HDD failure (which seems odd if yours is new), or also the possibility that the HDD ribbon might have been damaged (which is also unlikely since you can swap the 30 back in).  Most searches I've made so far all end up with "take it to repair shop"..

I assume you've tried many more things that we've not discussed, but have you tried doing the full reset with the 30GB drive in, does that work?  Also, I wonder if the software might not be looking for the 30GB Zune when you plug it in, and is confused by the 120 drive instead.  Did you disassociate the 30 from the software?

Sorry.. I'm sure these are things you've tried or thought of, but you never know.

Hey, I just wanted to say that I'm still here - I've been busy with a couple midterms and haven't got to test what you said yet, but I will do in the next couple days.

No worries.. midterms takes precedence over electronics!   Good luck with those! Smiley

I'm also very interested to see your results.  I'm having the same problem.  I had a Zune 30 first gen.  I upgraded it to a 120 a while back and it was working just fine.  The drive went bad due to my own fault so I replaced the drive, again going for the 120.  I know I was able to get the drive recognized years ago, so it's my belief that it's a software issue with the Zune.  Granted, MS would not likely support my particular issue since I've voided the warranty by doing this upgrade, but considering that they've abandoned the Zune players, I have no problem trying to resolve this matter on my own.

I've been trying to see if I could locate my original disc that came with the 30, install it to a computer not attached to the internet and see about doing a firmware update to the drive.  I feel that starting from scratch on the unit may yield some kind of way around this problem.  I'll keep you posted as well.

Okay, so I managed to find my original disc!  The original 1.0.5341.0 software that came out with the first gen.  I'm going to install this on another computer I have laying around the house and attempt to load that old firmware that likely came with the software onto the unit.  It's my hope that time-travelling my Zune will get a firmware loaded on it.  Once I get through this step, then I'll try doing an upgrade by moving the Zune to my laptop that has the 4.8.2345.0 software installed.  If I can get any firmware loaded onto it, it will be a step in the right direction.

Cross your fingers that this works.

Hmmm, fellas, I'm kinda stumped.  I had originally thought I was making headway with this issue, but after reviewing what I found, I realized that my assumptions were incorrect.  Here's what I've done so far...

Using a machine installed with Windows XP SP3, I installed the original Zune software, the version 1.0.5341.0.  I connected the Zune and attempted to load that old original firmware onto the drive, unto which I received an error stating the following:

"It is not possible to change sync settings at this time. Try again later."

One thing I thought peculiar was the drive size registered by the Zune software - It was showing as being only 1GB, or specifically 1024MB; At first I thought this was the issue, but then after re-checking my math, it would not be the problem.

[As a side note, the most up-to-date firmware is about 35MB per the software version 4.8.2345.0, as seen in the following directory: C:\Users\<yourusernamehere>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Zune\Firmware Updates\2 with a file named firmware update being 34,993kb.]

My thoughts on this are the following:

-The Zune software may be looking for a 30GB drive in order to proceed (this could be the case with both the 1.0.5341.0 software and the current 4.8.2345.0 software).
-Because the drive is being misreported as being 1GB, it may be more of a cautionary message via the software that there is a problem with the device, which stands to wonder how to make the Zune see that a larger capacity drive is installed.

I recall at one time while using a version that actually displayed my Zune 30 as a Zune 120 when I upgraded the drive, but then after doing upgrades, it always labeled it as a Zune 30 while showing the correct storage size.  This also makes me think that perhaps it's just a matter of getting my hands on a copy of one of the previous installations, perhaps when ever the 2nd generation Zunes started hitting the market, which included the 120.  I want to say that it was probably a version of the 2 or 3 software, sometime before they incorporated the Quickplay feature into the Zune.  Unfortunately, I don't have any old copies of the software other than the 1.0.5341.0, 4.7.1404.1 and what I'm running on my laptop right now, which is the 4.8.2345.0

If anyone has any old setup files, please let me know.

Here's a list of revisions:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zune_Software_version_history

I'll keep searching for old copies out there.  The setup file would have been named ZuneSetupPkg.  If you want to find out the version, right-click the file>properties, then choose the details tab on the properties window.

One other thing I didn't mention.  I also have a Zune 80.  I had tried connecting the Zune 80 to that computer with the original software installed and the Zune software couldn't recognize it.  I did this to see what the drive size would register as.  Since the device wasn't recognized, it stands to be possible that in later releases of the software, the device was recognized, which I would also believe that the Zune 120 hardware would also be recognized.

I've been able to find a copy of the 3.0.532.0 release.  I'm going to upgrade the zune software on my running copy on the XP box to see if it may recognize the modded 30 as a 120.

I've been running into a bit of a snag with the computer, so I'm now defaulting to using the Virtual PC via Win7.  The real nice thing about this is that if the install screws up, I can dump the OS and start again.  Will keep you all posted.
