Every Windows Phone [Won't] Get the Windows Phone 8 Upgrade

If your phone is running Windows Phone 7, you [won't] be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8 when it comes out.

The announcement was made by a Microsoft spokesman earlier today and was pretty explicit.

Update: Sources say current Windows Phone devices will not get 'Apollo' upgrade.

Earlier today, a developer evangelist for Microsoft was quoted as saying that all Windows Phone devices would get an upgrade to the "next major version" of the operating system.

Now, a trusted source close to Microsoft tells us that is absolutely not the case, that instead there will be no upgrade path from Mango to Apollo. This matches up with a previous report from Mary Jo Foley and explains the particular language Microsoft used when it responded to the story earlier today, saying "We have stated publicly that all apps in our Marketplace today will run on the next version of Windows Phone. Beyond that, we have nothing to share about future releases."

The news that Mango phones won't be getting an update to Windows Phone Apollo doesn't bode well for everybody who just purchased a Nokia Lumia 900, to say nothing of the other phones that Microsoft and its partners have managed to sell. If there is a silver lining to be found in the dark cloud besides future app compatibility, it's that this major break could mean that Apollo will contain some major feature improvements over Windows Phone 7.

Seriously, these tech blogs are so eager to try and push the idea of what seems good on The surface ie Microsoft doing updates for all phones. Yet they forget that Microsoft has proven they don't have what it takes to pull something like that off. Nodo anybody?

The Verge and Mary Jo Foley are both reporting that this isn't true. Microsoft and Nokia aren't saying anything.

Microsoft evangelist admits he misspoke regarding Windows Phone 8 updates
By Zachary Lutz  posted Apr 19th 2012 at 9:23PM

This is why companies have to be careful in their external communication: if a spokesperson reveals relevant details about an anticipated product, the news is going to be reported.

Such a situation happened just two days ago, when Microsoft employee Nuno Silva went on the record -- on video, nonetheless -- to say that all current Windows Phone handsets would receive the upgrade to Apollo. Not so fast.

Silva has since retracted his statement and now insists that his remarks only extend to apps. Yep. What he meant to say was that existing Windows Phone applications should work with the new operating system.

Beyond that clarification, however, the company has no new information to share regarding the upgrade potential of current Windows Phone handsets. Makes you wonder if anyone in the company knows for sure.

As odd as it sounds I think that this is the right answer. Fragmentation is almost unavoidable when you do not control the hardware and software. If Microsoft attempted to try to make Windows phone eight fully compatible with old handsets they would have a bunch of very laggy problematic handsets that customers would not tolerate.

I am hearing Appollo will be based on Win8, not WinCE which WP7 is based. My issue with Microsoft and Nokia is, the big deal they made with the Lum900, now that won't be seeing any updates to WP 8. PR nightmare.

Kinda feels like WP7 was/is a placeholder product!
