OK guys, there's a lot of new threads about people having problems with:
a. installing Zune software or
b. the software installing but then not seeing the Zune device (if this is you go to no. 10)

It can be frustrating but usually there's a fix. The problem is, unless you post some basic information we can't help you.

Before posting follow these guidelines:

1. Make sure your system meets the requirements by checking here http://www.zune.net/en-us/meetzune/software/releasenotes.htm#minimumsystemrequirements

2. Make sure you have IE 7 and Windows Media Player 11 installed, as well as manually doing Windows Update and installing all available updates.

3. Disable any Firewall, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and Anti-AdWare software you may have installed. To eliminate spyware, adware and other malicious software you may have running on your machine, Download Windows Defender from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en and let it scan your machine and remove anything it detects as being a threat.

4. Try installing the latest Zune software from the Zune site here http://www.zune.net/en-us/meetzune/software.htm

5. Search on Zune.net here a lot of support is given there http://www.zune.net/en-US/support/ and also make sure you go through the steps outlined in the MS KB Article Here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929358/ for those of you without the software already installed, skip step 1. This link includes how to uninstall Zune software.

6. READ the forum. Chances are you're not the only one having this issue and someone has posted a solution already.

7. Use the search feature in the forum (top right) to search for your error message.

8. Try contacting Zune Tech support. The numbers and hours are here http://www.zune.net/en-US/support/contactsupport/.

9. If you are running a non-English version of Windows XP w/ SP2 follow these steps (or check http://www.zunescene.com/forums/index.php?topic=7196.0 for a complete tutorial with pictures):

   Start > Run Cmd.exe
net localgroup USERS /add -> enter
net localgroup INTERACTIVE /add -> enter
net localproup USERS "Username" /add -> enter
net localproup INTERACTIVE "Username" /add -> enter

   Substitute "Username" with your username.

10. If your software is installed but it doesn't see your Zune try this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929357/

If none of these solutions help you, and only then, carefully make a post here which includes specific details as outlined below:

1. What version of the Zune Software?
2. What version of Windows?
3. What firmware version is on your device?
4. What version of the Zune device driver is installed on your PC?
5. The exact error message (or screenshots of it) that you are getting.
6. The Zune install log (Start > Run > %temp%\Zuneinstall.log)

By following the steps in this thread you are more likely to get help and faster.

Once you are up and running check out zune.net to help you get started syncing your Zune! http://www.zune.net/en-US/support/howto/start/

Thanks to rockstarbill for his help making this.

[This Sticky has be reinstated for the holidays because many people are getting new Zunes. Thank you, Teccom747]

We should probably provide a nice disclaimer telling folks they should be in selective start mode when they are removing and reinstalling software. Whether it is IE7, WMP or Zune Software.

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
3. Under Selective Startup, uncheck the following checkboxes:
• Process SYSTEM.INI File
• Process WIN.INI File
• Load Startup Items
4. On the Services tab, click the Hide All Microsoft Services box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

this will only help installation errors, it has nothing to do with the Zune not being seen through the software after instalation or during firmware updates. Those are all driver issues...

And where in this statement did I say users should try this fix for firmware issues? The driver problems are fixed 90% of the time with the CryptSvc fix.

HERES THE FIX FOR ME:

Symtom: NO charge, connect or SYNC.

FIX:
well after about 10 hours of my time, 3 zunes and 3 calls to tech support with not being resolved( the last tech was smart and not reading the computer screen) I found a fix:

I went out and bought a PCI USB card, soon as i installed I was syncing and adding music within minutes after a firmware updat. The 6 hub PCI USB card was 17.99 at local PC shop.

So If you have this problem, go out and buy one. Sux, but it worked.

tried the catroot thing but when i tried this command "ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2" it says access denied.
What version of the Zune Software? 1.0.5341.0
What version of Windows? XP pro 5.1.2600 service pack 2 build 2600
What firmware revision is on your device? i donno what this is. but the version is 1.2(434)
                                                                                                hardware 2.0
What version of the Zune device driver is installed on your PC? 1.2.0.0
The exact error message (or screenshots of it) that you are getting.

options>sync>more options>devices only finds my cd/dvd drive. not even other usb things on my comp. is this normal.
there isnt a specific error message here i guess..besides what i said above about the access denied.

The Zune install log (Start > Run > %temp%\Zuneinstall.log)
that install log thing is huge! but u asked for it.

but first just a note on what i think might be the problem.
A= my usb2 sux testies. seems to work with other stuff though.
B= i have already used the zune on another computer which was the first one i set up on. therefore the one i will use now would be guest sync...but i havent gotten a screen to ask me yet. and i cant take my zune off the other computer untill the 14th of march coz you can only do it so often every month or somehting(stupid)
C= magical ponies have a grudge on me!!! WHY!

ok here is the install log:sorry in advance for its length..is this supposed to be this long?

EDIT: i think the log is too long to write in here Tongue
ill add it in my next post
nope wont work.
give me your email and ill send it through to you Cheesy
