Fortunately I've had a very good experience with converting videos and such like to a format my Zune will play, and I know there are many many confused and pissed off people around the forum who are having trouble with ripping/converting files.
So I thought i'd share my positive experiences...
I know there are a few good guides around the forum using GordianKnot and others, mainly free apps but for those having trouble a few clicks on 1 piece of software which gives a direct Zune-friendly output can only be a good thing...
First off this guide is to rip DVD discs and/or DVD files you have on your computer. Not to convert .avi/.mpg etc etc. I will post a guide for that in the near future (its a bit more complex than this one).
The little program your after is
ImToo DVD to WMV Converter although i believe it has just been renamed to
ImToo DVD to Zune Converter, whichever its exactly the same program.
Grab it from here
http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-to-zune-converter.htmlRun the program. Go to File> and then 'Add DVD Folder...' or 'Add IFO Files...' depending on whether its a disc or some files your ripping.
Then find your target and add it to the program. It will then list all the titles in your DVD as below...

Right, now we need to check a few settings to make sure it works! Read this bit carefully and make sure you have it set correctly...

- Select 'Keep Original' in Output Frame Rate.
- Tick 'Detect Prograssive 24Hz'.
- DO NOT tick 'Force Progressive 24Hz'.
- Deinterlace filter is 'Interpolate'.
- Choose the 'iDCT:' that matches your processor, mine was P4, doesn't mean yours is.
- Check 'Use ASPI' and 'DeMacroVision'.
- Key Search is 'Once'.
- Offset is '0'.
- Tick 'Original Colors'.
- Downsampling should be 'Normal Quality 48KHz to 44.1KHz' (Zune won't support 48KHz unfortunately)
- You can detect the vollume if you wan't but 3 is generally a good average.
NOTE: It shouldn't happen (hasn't for me yet) but if you do get audio/video sync issues, tick 'Audio/Video Synchronisation' and re-rip.
Thats the settings done, you can click OK and return to the ripper main window.

Now the last few bits - the settings on the main window should be exactly as they are in my screens above. apart from the destination where you want to save your file.
(At the bottom of the window)
- Profile is 'WMV - Windows Media Video {*.wmv}'
- Zoom is 'Letterbox'
- Split is 'Infinite'
(On the right of the window)
- Video codec is 'wmv3x'
- Video Size is '320x240'
- Bit rate is '768'
- Frame rate & Aspect is 'Auto'
- Same Quality & Disable Video is 'False'
- Audio codec is 'wma9x'
- Bit rate is '192'
- Sample rate is '44100'
- Channels is '2 (Stereo)'
- Disable Audio is 'False'
Thats everything, as long as you've followed the above, hit the red record button just above the profile setting to start ripping, wait a bit....and you should now have your prefectly formed WMV file ready to sync to your Zune, no re-convert required!
Hope this helps some people...any questions, ask away!
